The Effect of Residential Independence Training using Problem Solving Format of Study Materials on Work Preparation Skill of Individuals with Intellectual Disabilities

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of residential independence training using problem solving format of study materials on work preparation skill of individuals with intellectual disabilities. For this purpose, three individuals with intellectual disabilities maintaining work life as office assistants at mail centers were selected as subjects. The experimental environment was configured as home environment in which the subjects actually live. For residential independence training as an independent variable, written language and visual image were used together with problem solving format of study materials as the main principle and method. Also, in order to facilitate efficient learning of such problem solving format of study materials according to the changing tendency of the subjects about target behavior during the overall intervention period, the format consisted of multiple forms including forms 1¢¦3. In addition, work preparation skill, the target behavior of the subjects acquired through the intervention program, was operationally defined as an act of ironing work uniforms and hanging them in a closet. The subjects performed such target behavior in the evening after returning home from work, and they participated in the procedure for performing the target behavior after receiving the intervention program. As a result of this study, the subjects were found to effectively acquire, maintain and generalize work preparation skill through residential independence training using problem solving format of study materials.
